Apple snatches the smartphone sales crown from Samsung


The Galaxy S6 cannot come quickly enough for Samsung. The longtime leader in smartphone sales lost its lead in Q4 2014 to — you guessed it — Apple, according to a new Gartner Research report.

Granted, Apple’s lead is not commanding. Apple sold 74.8 million smartphones, while Samsung sold 73 million units (a distant third was Motorola, a.k.a. Lenovo). And for the year, Samsung outsold Apple 307.6 million units to 191 million units.

Overall, smartphone sales are now dominating the mobile phone market. Worldwide sales topped 1.2 billion units, accounting for two-thirds of all mobile phone sales. Read more…
